Soak walnuts in bourbon at least 3 hours. Combine walnuts, sugar and butter and shape into 3/4 inch balls. Chill at least 30 minutes.
Combine chocolate and shortening in top of double boiler; heat until chocolate melts, stirring occasionally. Spear each ball with wooden toothpick and dip into chocolate mixture. Place on wax paper and chill to harden chocolate. Store in refrigerator. Makes about 4 dozen.
